Donate Now to Keep a Child Safe this Summer

Take a moment to view our new video and see for yourself how important a carefree summer is to our littlest clients.

Every summer since 1968, Family and Children's Association’s Summer Camp Program has provided children with a respite from the troubled lives they face at home. Each summer, more than 100 children are given the opportunity to enjoy something they might not enjoy all year - their childhood!

Through individual donations and major support from King Kullen Grocery Co., Inc. and Newsday Charities Kids Campaign, the Family and Children's Summer Camp Program places children in carefully chosen accredited sleep-away and day camps throughout New York and New Jersey.

Your gift to the Camp Program can make a difference in young lives by giving these children an opportunity to build memories that last a lifetime. With your help, Family and Children's Association can continue to provide a summer camping experience for disadvantaged children - at the Hagedorn Family Resource Center in Hempstead, many of whom might not otherwise get this opportunity.

To sponsor a child, call Resource Development (516)746-0350 x336 or click here and select "summer camp" from the dropdown menu.

How your donation can help:
Sponsorships:

$10,000: Create a Summer Camp Scholarship Fund in your name - or that of a loved one - and send a child to camp every year for ten years

$5,000: Fund a weekly field trip for the entire summer

$1,800: Fund a sports program for the entire summer

$700: Sponsor one child for the Summer Camp season

$100: Sponsor one child for one week of camp

$25: Sponsor one child for one day of camp

Give the gift of summer by contributing to the Family and Children's/Camp Program and help turn children's dreams of summer into reality. Research shows that young people from economically distressed areas can experience a "learning loss" over summer recess. At the Summer of Promise, our goal was to prevent such a loss by challenging our campers to continue to learn as they had fun. At camp, our young people experienced a summer of sports and field trips combined with instruction in the arts, science, mathematics, and creative writing.

Katarina is one such camper. Once confident and outgoing, by the time she was in the fifth grade she was struggling. She had few friends in or out of school and hardly maintained eye contact with adults. When asked about her concerns she would say she was afraid of gangs in the neighborhood or at school. Her mother was in cancer treatment. The family was struggling financially and with three growing children, too often, there was little time or attention left for Katarina. But the Summer of Promise helped. It offered Katarina a chance to interact with other kids her age, play sports and spend time with positive role models who cared. Katarina was encouraged to speak out more and, over time, she became increasingly more comfortable. She was one of the youth who interviewed a senior citizen for a community cookbook project and was thrilled to visit the Museum of Natural History and the New York Aquarium. Katarina spent her summer learning about respect, sportsmanship, healthy competition and cooperation. As a result, her confidence grew as she discovered her unique talents and abilities.
