About the Center:

The Hagedorn Family Resource Center, located on Greenwich Street in Hempstead in the former Our Lady of Loretto parochial school, brings to the community a comprehensive program of services focused on the healthy development of all families by filling the gaps that families experience in their support systems

The Hagedorn Family Resource Center is a true community center providing services to families who reside in the Village of Hempstead and neighboring communities. The Center assists parents in achieving their personal and family goals through services, information, resources and referrals. It advances the study habits, social and academic performance of elementary school children through its after-school program.

At the Center, ”La Escuelita” offers Spanish-speaking pre-kindergartners the instruction they need to improve their English language skills while continuing to improve their native language skills. Opportunities are provided for non-English speaking adults to attend English as a Second Language instruction. In addition, the Hagedorn Family Resource Center collaborates with other providers to offer on-site pediatric healthcare and low-cost health enrollment to children and works with other Family and Children’s Association programs and outside agencies to provide meaningful community services and programs on site, while offering bilingual support across the agency.

Programs offered at the Center:

Child Care

  • Nursery Co-op: A short-term childcare and case management program for parents seeking employment, education or training in pursuit of self-sufficiency. Download brochure.

Education

  • Afterschool: This New York State licensed program takes place each day after school until 5:45 p.m. The program offers elementary school-age children reinforcement of their academic experiences by working with them on their homework. The program works to establish good academic habits and help children exhibit increased competence in school work, increased mastery in academic subjects and improved socialization skills.
  • Parents and Students’ Success Afterschool Program (PASS): This is a free afterschool program focused on tutoring and homework assistance for elementary school-age children.
  • English as a Second Language (ESL): In collaboration with the Hempstead School District’s Adult and Community Education Program, ESL classes are offered five days a week to adults in the community during the operational hours of the Nursery Co-op. Child care is available for the adult participants of the Co-op Nursery who are acquiring English language skills as one of their goals of self-sufficiency.
  • Hempstead Pre-kindergarten: The Hempstead School District operates its Pre-kindergarten program at the Hagedorn Family Resource Center. Two sessions are offered daily during the school year for 4 year olds.
  • “La Escuelita:” La Escuelita, The Little School, opened in the fall of 2006 to help increase school readiness of pre-kindergartners from homes where Spanish is the primary language. Its goal is to help children achieve the same improvements as their English-speaking peers including cognitive, social and emotional development.
  • "Little Library:"  Volunteer Mary Ellen S. has created a unique space that houses a lending library for 2 to 12 year olds. Formerly a pass-through, this Little Library is transforming the lives of children who are inspired to read, research and create a love of reading.  View our video.

Family Support

  • Care Coordination: This program makes all the services offered by Family and Children’s Association easily accessible. By making just one call to Care Coordination, an individual can be referred to the best program within the agency to meet his or her needs.
  • Family Mediation: This program provides short-term crisis counseling and family intervention to resolve conflicts between at-risk adolescents and their families, with the goal of preventing running away, homelessness and other anti-social behaviors.
  • Press Program: In collaboration with the Hempstead Public Schools, this program provides education and support to pregnant school-age girls to encourage and empower them through a variety of activities, which promote parenting skills.
  • Mentoring Program: Adult mentors offer support, counseling and friendship to encourage youngsters to achieve their goals and bring out their existing strengths.

Medical Assistance

  • Child Health Plus/Family Health Plus Medicaid: Family and Children’s Association registers families in need for Child Health Plus and Family Health Plus at the Hagedorn Family Resource Center on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
  • North Shore-Long Island Jewish Children’s Health Network Pediatric Mobile Health Center: A mobile pediatrician’s office that is fully-equipped to provide medical care services to infants, children and adolescents is based at the Hagedorn Family Resource Center.  Children may use services as they would at any pediatrician’s office. The Mobile Health Unit is staffed by experienced medical staff, specializing in children’s health care, including a pediatrician, medical assistant, nurse practitioner, social worker and emergency medical technician.

Me Gusta

  • Me Gusta (“I Like”) is an organization of mothers from within the Hagedorn Family Resource Center who create one of a kind handmade crafts and whose children attend the Co-op Nursery. When you purchase Me Gusta bags or beads, 1/3 of the donation goes to replenishing the materials, 1/3 goes to the craftswoman who made the items, and 1/3 goes back to Me Gusta so it can continue growing. If you would like more information call 516.483.5323.
