Project Independence
Project Independence is a comprehensive, non-residential program designed to prepare youths between the ages of 14-21 who are in foster care, or discharged from foster care, to live and work independently in the community when they are no longer eligible for foster care. Download brochure.
Youths participate in individual counseling and group workshops provided by Project Independence to develop independent living skills. In addition, the program works with other community service agencies in order to help each young person with individual living needs and goals.
The program works closely with foster parents as well as the young people by including home visits and supportive services on a regular basis. Foster parent training and support groups are offered throughout the year.

Independent Living
Project Independence - Nassau can provide a supervised apartment for older youths, ages 17-20, who, in preparation for discharge from foster care, need a supportive, transitional living setting. They must be capable of managing the range of responsibilities necessary to live independently in the community. Staff from Project Independence visit the youths regularly to provide support services. The apartment program is certified by the New York State Department of Social Services.
Project Independence does not discriminate because of race, creed or national origin. There are no charges for any of the services. Project Independence is funded by the Nassau County Department of Social Services and the Suffolk County Department of Social Services.
